Treadmills are a favorite for indoor walking and running. They come in different sizes, brand names and may range from under a hundred dollars to a few thousand. The choices are unlimited. How do you determine which treadmill is right for you?

The main focus of your selection should include purchasing a high quality treadmill that meets your fitness needs and is within your price range. Try to bypass the temptation to purchase a treadmill based on low cost. Also consider

  • Fitness goals. How you plan to use the treadmill plays a key role in your selection. Will you use it for walking, running or a combination of walking or running?
  • Speed. If you use your treadmill for walking, an appropriate speed range is 6 to 8 mph. However, if you perform serious running, you need a treadmill averaging the higher speed levels up to 12 mph.
  • Belt width. Test the treadmill to make sure you have a generous belt width to feel comfortable. You can use a walking track as your guide.
  • Belt length. For those of you who are tall, your strides are longer. Therefore, you should consider a treadmill with a longer belt length.
  • Stability: When you step on the treadmill, you should feel a solid structure and not one that shakes or vibrates.
  • Display/Monitor Panel: Determine if you want the display console to show the miles, heart rate, time, and distance while you exercise. Some treadmill brands require you to push a button to display each item separately while others automatically perform this task. Also consider the size of the displayed information. Do you want the displayed information large for reading or small to minimize distractions?
  • Adjustments/Preprogrammed. Some treadmills have preprogrammed workouts that adjust speed automatically. This could come in handy if you want more variety in your routine.
  • Cushioning: Cushioning helps protects your joints and muscles from strenuous impact. Moderate cushioning is ideal. Too much or to little cushioning can cause sore muscles or injuries. All treadmill manufacturers have cushioning to lessen the impact but try the treadmill and choose one that provides you with the most comfort.
  • Fitness Specialty Stores. Purchase your treadmill from a fitness equipment specialty store. These stores specialize in fitness equipment and provide a greater selection for you to choose from. And, specialty fitness stores normally employ certified associates to address your questions regarding exercise equipment.
  • A Test Ride. Always test the treadmill before you buy it. Test the machine for comfort and satisfaction. If you don’t like using the treadmill, chances are you won’t keep up your exercise routine.
  • Treadmill Reviews. Check out the various consumer reports and treadmill reviews. The reports provide information on the top treadmill brands, compares the treadmill features and provide consumers opinions about the equipment. These reports may help you narrow your search.

Buying a treadmill is an investment that requires time and knowledge. Once you find the right treadmill, you can start shedding the pounds or maintaining your weight, pump the heart for a good cardiovascular work out and love exercising.
