While we continue to search for the key to a long, healthy and
happy life, we fail to see that countless self-help books, therapy
sessions and pills merely cover up what the answer really is.
Improving your health means improving your attitude. This can be
done in five simple ways: eat right, exercise, stay optimistic,
get plenty of sleep and find your life’s purpose. Doing this can
greatly increase your overall health, both mental and physical.
Wake up in the morning with optimism, and
continue that optimism throughout the day Avoid reading the
newspaper or watching the news. Barely anything that is reported
is good news, and waking up to a daily dose of pessimism is never
a good way to start the day. As an alternative, sip your coffee
and just take in that moment. Be thankful you are alive, healthy
and have those around you that you care about. You don’t have to
be religious or even spiritual, just be grateful for what you
have; being optimistic also means not worrying so much about
things. Remember that some things in life are not in your control,
and you shouldn’t try to make them your fault or responsibility.
Eat healthy; two simple words that you’ve
probably heard growing up, but it is very important to your
health. Stick to whole grains, fruits and vegetables that are rich
in vitamins and minerals. Reduce the amount of processed foods you
eat such as bread, pasta, cereal and candy, as these contain
refined sugar that cause higher fat deposits and can adversely
affect your mood, and can even become addicting.
Try to avoid overeating. Eat until you are
full, and then stop. Don’t allow your eyes to be bigger than your
stomach. Overeating can result in weight gain, thus increasing
your chances of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other related
illnesses.
Try exercising for at least twenty minutes
everyday. If this is impossible to fit into your schedule, then
try working out every three days for twenty to thirty minutes.
Exercising, including aerobic workouts will help you burn fat.
Weight lifting increases your lean muscle mass, thus boosting you
metabolism and resulting in more calorie burning and weight loss
throughout the day. Staying active also helps your mood stay
positive and bright. You will also find that you have much more
energy during the day.
Get sleep. This is very important in staying
healthy and active. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body
will slow down as a result of fatigue, thus slowing down your
metabolism and causing weight gain. Hormones are secreted in your
sleep that help your body to repair and rejuvenate after the day,
if an inadequate amount of this hormone is produced, then your
body is more prone to injury and illness. Getting enough sleep can
also help keep your mood light, and keep your from getting
irritable and negative with those around you.
Lastly, find a reason for living. This sounds
profound, but finding a purpose in your life can help keep you
motivated and goal oriented; and when you are driven you keep
yourself healthy enough to reach those goals. Whether it is for
your family, your job or maybe your community, finding a path in
life to follow is one big way to stay healthy.
